Times they are changing...

I have been doing more flying and less talking about flying and I'm using this entry to clean out some subscribers who have moved on from my blog.

Meetings changed to Sunday and Weddell takes shape

A week ago we held our first meeting on a Sunday in a long time. I liked it for a number of reasons. I was able to come down to MKT, go for a flight, come back and attend the meeting where a new member joined the meeting and after we concluded Armin prepared the classic bacon, toast, sausage and eggs breakfast (and devilled kidneys) which was a pretty fine way to spend a Sunday morning.

It might be good for catering purposes for folks to place an order via email (or something like that) when meetings are held, so that if Armin is available and willing to cook up a storm, he has an idea of how many to cater for.

AGM to coincide with MKT Anniversary

This year's AGM of the Top End Flying Club will coincide with the 28th anniversary of MKT aerodrome being established by the Meyering Family back when people genuinely asked "where the bloody hell is Noonamah" because it was considered "out bush".

When is it?

6:30pm on the 26th of August 2011 at MKT Airfield in the TEFC clubroom.

Armin will be cooking up a storm so come along and remember you do need to be financial to vote.

We have seen a transformation in the club, the airfield, the infrastucture that supports the airfield and maybe most importantly an acceptance by the greater community of the Top End and Government that we are a positive cornerstone in the plans to develop the outskirts of Darwin and the new city of Weddell.

Greater Darwin Region Land Use Plan Towards 2030 Consultation Paper - MKT Aerodrome

I went through the consultative paper prepared by the NT Department of Planning and Infrastructure looking for any reference to MKT Aerodrome. You can read and download the consultation paper from http://www.nt.gov.au/lands/growth/gdr_2030/consultation_paper/documentation.shtml.

I looked for Airport, Aerodrome, Airfield and MKT. I only found the word Airport eight times and all referred to the Darwin International Airport precinct and half of those words referred not to the transport infrastructure aspect, but to the retail area where Bunnings is.

Although some may feel that MKT has been ignored in the document, it represents a great step forward for a couple of reasons.

Weddell Outcomes report now available and MKT is on the Map!

I went along to the Weddell presentation last night and naturally there was some trepidation as anything can change between a conference and the final report. I am pleased to say that MKT Aerodrome was not only included in the report which you can read by clicking on the image below, but here are some of the extracts from the report.

Committee Meeting TEFC at MKT Aerodrome tomorrow evening Tuesday 16 November 2010 6:30pm

There will be a committee meeting tomorrow evening.

Some of the topics on the agenda as I understand it are preparing a response to the misinformation being spread on both ABC Radio and through the NT News regarding the future of MKT Aerodrome.

As you will probably be aware, we believe that responding with fact and citizen-minded intentions that will aid the aviation community while working in concert with the broader community - Weddell residents and Territory residents is the correct thing to do.

Weddell - The first plans are out

64 people in 8 teams worked on a variety of designs over the last week and I am please to present a preliminary photo album of their designs. Towards the middle of the album, after the crowd shot are photos of MKT's location on the map with planned surrounding build up. The purple colour represents industrial areas. I am pleased because compared to day one of the conference where it was apparent that MKT aerodrome was not a welcome addition to the mix despite being the only true continuing corporate citizen of Weddell for over thirty years transformed into an inked in permanent inclusion in the future Weddell landscape.

If the fact that the red (CBD/high density areas) appear to be quite close to Weddell rather than down towards the Elizabeth River bridge end, it is because there are identified areas of almost unliveable land due to the biting insects. The areas on the map where the concentrations of buildings (red) are indicate the less "bitey" areas of Weddell.

Don't forget you can continue to have your say by going to http://www.nt.gov.au/lands/growth/weddell/haveyoursay/index.shtml and filling out the form.

Weddell and MKT - Just the facts

8 design teams have been locked away  in the Darwin Convention Centre drawing up plans that will be put on show to the public tomorrow afternoon at 4pm at the Darwin Convention Centre. Throughout the week Mike Hatton and Mick Heiner along with the friends of MKT have mounted a continued structured presentation of the facts that would do mythbusters proud.

This is just a short note to say that if you cannot make it to the 4pm presentation at the Darwin Convention Centre, there will be a briefing provided by Mick Heiner at the MKT Clubhouse this Friday night 1st of October 2010 at 7pm. Mick will go through some of the incorrect information that formed part of the assumption that MKT's flying future was destined to die like the dodos and will present the facts that have cemented MKT into all future plans of Weddell.

In the same way MKT faced the big challenge some 6 years ago of ensuring the dwellings and buildings were coded and compliant, the MKT community has again rallied as a cohesive and coherent voice that presented facts, opportunity and a willingness to work with all people to make Weddell a successful reality.

Thank you all who have contributed to this outcome.

Huge couple of days at the Weddell planning conference

Well, I think the NT Government have finally heard about the little aerodrome called MKT...

For second time in two years, the words "compulsorily acquire" were uttered after facts about MKT's thirty two year history were detailed. We, the friends of MKT Aerodrome have always supported and welcomed the town/city of Weddell.
