Seeing as I am going through this process, I thought it best to share it with you... Firstly for those who don't know, it isn't a card that gets you into the Australian Security Investments Commission... but rather
If I may quote from Fact sheet 13 http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/transport/security/aviation/factsheet/fact13.aspx#1
What is an ASIC?
An Aviation Security Identification Card, known as an ASIC, is an identification card which is used to identify a person who has been the subject of a background check. An ASIC is required to obtain unescorted access to the secure areas of security controlled airports that have regular public transport (RPT) services. ASICs are valid for up to two years.
The ASIC scheme is a layer of security that ensures that only people who have been background checked to a certain level are permitted to be in the secure areas of airports. The ASIC scheme aims to reduce the risk of unlawful interference with aviation, not just terrorism.
Why do I want an ASIC? Read on...
At the end of May I will be joining some fellow fliers from the Top End Flying Club on an oddesy that will take us from MKT to Kununurra and back. What is in Kununnurra? The Moon Festival
http://www.xsymetrix.com.au/tefc/index.cfm/2010/2/4/Moon-Festival-Kununurra-Flyaway-in-May#more
Now I am not really a John Farnham fan but the adventure of flying to Kununurra and back is great. I will probably take about 5 hours and go via Daly River, Purlumpa, Bulla, Kununurra... It will be a few firsts for me. My first interstate flight in my drifter, possibly my longest flight although I will need to compare it with my flight to Kidman Springs. Although I have landed at Darwin airport in my Drifter, this will be my first trip into a RPT airport without arranging things months beforehand.
I know this is probably very ho hum for most of our members, but if my little two stroke fails between Daly River and Purlumpa, it is a fairly challenging bit of country to be walking out of... beautiful yet unforgiving might be the turn of phrase.
So like my trip to Kidman, I have my trusty GPS, Camelback, First Aid kit, EPIRB and some other things that I will lay out and photograph before I go. I would be happy to hear of any suggestions from other drifter pilots as to what they take on these sorts of trips.
I guess broadly there are
- Flight related consumables (fuel, oil, batteries, spark plugs)
- Basic tools and Tiedowns (mr funnel, spanners)
- Survival kit (First aid, camelback)
- Recording gear (Cameras)
- Nav gear (GPS, maps)
- Repair stuff (tube, cable ties, stickyback)
- Things in your pocket (glasses, wallet, phone, pen, toothbrush)
- Change of clothes (stuff you need at the other end)
Anyway if all is good I will head to Daly River this weekend to prove that I can get at least a quarter of the way... and I guess I will be able to see some of the Barra classic.
