Karate

Firstly Joe participated in a karate competition at the end of September which looked at three major areas – individual forms which are the sets of movements they learn, group or team demonstrations and finally sparring. One of my long time work colleagues won a trophy and will represent her region and to prove how small Darwin is, seated behind her were two other colleagues from my workplace at Berrimah farm. Alongside Natalie, the other recipient is the son of a current work colleague. Joe received a bronze and silver medal for his efforts and a great experience.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, Joe is playing in the under 14 team as well. The boys won this game but it was closer than the U12 game. There are a number of boys who like Joe are 9 or 10 playing in the U14's and aquitting themselves quite well. We are fortunate to have such good facilities available so close to where we live.

This is from last week's game which the boys won. I think they are on top of the ladder but the most important thing is that that they are all having a great time and playing as a team. It would be great if people who watch the video could add comments showing the time when goals are scored so folks can scroll to that part of the video.

Although my recording of these games is by no means professional, I am learning to not try and "chase the ball" with the camera, but to identify the direction and then pan the camera to that half of the court, ensuring that the net is in shot. Court 1 and 3 are the best for videoing and with the playsport kodak that I use, I set it to the lowest quality setting - WVGA rather than HD otherwise it would take forever to upload.

Enough of the technical stuff... The boys played well and got to within 4 goals and played the closest game against this team so far.

Now for the videos (I left the camera running during the quarter time breaks.)

TV Jets U12 played against Eagles today and as you will see from the footage, the Jets had distinct height advantage. Nr 11 on the eagles team certainly made in enthusiasm for any height disadvantage and both teams played well. We are currently at the top of the ladder for our division and the boys a getting a good amount of time on the court. Again the scoring was shared among the boys and they really are learning to push the ball out to another player if they don't have a clear shot. Well done!!

The boys won this match. Joe played in the U12 team and tried out for the first time in the U14 team. We won both games and Joe scored 5 goals in the U12 game and a goal and a penalty point in the U14 game which I thought was great. Both teams played well with great team effort and the variety of goal scorers in both games indicates good sharing and increased skill levels.

Although the boys lost the match, they continue to pass, defend and takes shots as a team. Joe is learning how to edit and post the videos to YouTube so we are combining sport, technology and some seriously fun family time.

Another great game on the weekend and in the end we went down by one goal against the current top team on the ladder. This is shaping up as team that is having fun and continuing to improve.
