Joe's cousins in Darwin - Crocosaurus Cove

Three of Joe's cousins - Ashley, Bianka and Cecilia are in Darwin on a holiday from Melbourne and by all accounts are enjoying the slightly different surroundings and lifestyle compared to the suburbs of Melbourne. We went off to Crocosaurus cove which really is a must see as it has good displays in a convenient location in the heart of the city.

As you can see, visitors can get up close and personal with some of the residents. Even Ashley at 3 years old wanted to get involved. Probably just a little too big for the snake but I am sure it considered its options.

And all this was before we had seen the crocodiles.

I think the best part is where the kids get to feed the crocodiles with fishing lines. Seeing these juvenile crocodiles jumping so high makes you think twice before hanging over the side of a boat.

Even the back legs of this guy are out of the water.

We even got to see Harry the Psychic Crocodile get fed. (I don't think he is really psychic)

Big Bad Harry

A great day and despite all the crocodiles and reptiles we didn't lose any children.

Crocosaurus Cove

I work just across the road from Crocosaurus Cove.

We hadn't visited the tourist destination because, well, we live in Darwin and we aren't tourists. However this past show weekend we decided not to brave the dust and crowds of the Darwin show and instead decided to play tourist in our own city. It is a really fun thing to do. Put on a Hawaiian shirt, drape the Nikon around your neck and voila - instant tourist.

Being Territorians, if you show your license you can return as many times as you like during a year after you have paid the first time. This is great when you are bringing around the Southern Visitors.

Visiting Zoos and what they do to you

I happen to be subscribed to a monthly newsletter about the major zoos in Victoria. http://www.zoo.org.au/ I received a copy yesterday and it made me think of the various places we have been with Joe and the joy that seeing animals brings. I am sure that there are a few folk who think that they should be roaming in the wild, but I believe that by exposing humans to these wonderful animals, expecially at a young age, a positive empathy towards all animals is developed.

Dragonflies

The arrival of dragonflies in Darwin signifies that the dry season is really here. A colleague and very good friend Dr. Brian Thistleton has compiled this album of dragonflies. Check it out.

Our first Cane Toad

Yesterday as we checked the yard I noticed that there was a cane toad in the pool, not a small one, a big one. I can confirm that it did not survive, but I did record it's last happy moments.

Years ago my aunt had drained her pool in Townsville as the toads just used it as a breeding ground. I hope 40 years later that the same fate does not befall swimming pool owners in Darwin.
