Hanoi, Ha Long and Sa Pa

We went from Da Nang by plane to Hanoi and spent an afternoon and night in Hanoi in the old quarter which is comprised of narrow streets filled with shops, history and backpacker service industries like hotels, tour companies and nightlife options along with a variety of eating establishments.

More videos from Freeport Mine - West Papua

This is another movie, or rather slideshow of some of the places located in Freeport, West Papua. They range from the highlands where the mine is located down to the lowlands where Timika is. For those still working there, this was shot during 2003 - 2004. For those who have left, this is a trip down memory lane.

Vegemite the movie - Vegemite at 10,000 feet

In my previous post I introduced Vegemite the Movie. The link pointed to part one, or actually the prequel to main event. This movie shot at 10,000 feet using one take without script was a piece of wonderful foolishness that I am so glad we created.

I now present "Makan with Dan and Mark" or "Dining with Dan and Mark" - also shot entirely on location in Papua West.

Finally - Vegemite the movie on YouTube

About six or seven years ago when I worked in Freeport, a mine in West Papua, a few of us wanted to make a movie that highlighted the impressive scenery in this region. We mulled over the topic of this movie for a period of time before deciding on making it an educational cooking film with a twist. We were going to teach people how to make a vegemite sandwich.

Our point of difference was that we would make this vegemite sandwich at 10000 feet above sea level on the side of a mountain range that rises to over 15,000 feet, twice the height of Australia's tallest mountain.

Travelling and using ATM machines

We have just returned from our quick birthday trip for Joe who turned nine on the tenth of December and spent the morning in Singapore and the afternoon in Malaysia. The combination of the iPad, the SLR camera and the iPod Nano meant that we had a mobile studio in a camera bag.

The movie of this is continued at the blog...

I've been to Bali too

I first went to Bali in 1976 and then in 1979 as an exchange student. About that time the Hummer aircraft was being transformed by Maxair into the Drifter ultralight. After New Year 2010 my family and my brother Sean's family spent a week holidaying in Bali. If you have read my holiday posts on previous journeys, you know there are a swag load of photographs and now thanks to my ipod nano a bunch of videos. These will be a subsequent posting.

I was going to take a trip down memory lane and visit some of the places I visited as a youth, but luckily one of the advantages of travelling with a group is that you are exposed to things you wouldn't normally do. This was the case with us.

If you know me, you know that I speak Indonesian reasonably well. It takes me about 24 hours to get the ear, brain and tounge coordinated enough to converse in a relaxed way and about 3 days before folks start asking me where I live (permanently) in Indonesia.

It caused some interesting situations that as with all things funny that happen when you travel, become the story most remembered after the holiday is long gone.

A nice story about a nice person...

When nice things happen to you that you don’t expect, it leaves you with a feeling of happiness that seems to extend beyond you or the person or event that caused the happiness.

This story is about a lady called Mary who did something for Joe on the last day of our holiday in New Zealand. We had already had a happy event on the day we arrived in Christchurch when something we left behind as we passed through customs was returned to us.
