TV Stations to train our pilots

I have written in my eLearning blog about livestream and the aviademy tv channel that I have set up. Apart from being an experiement to see how useful this would be in our traditional education context (although a TV channel on the internet is probably not that traditional)... I expanded the idea of having live video coverage at Natfly next year where we could capture the quality content from the workshops and the flightline and play that back live and as a repeat for those who didn't make it to the event.

Let's do what they do on the Discovery Channel

Hopefully an interesting lead in to what they actually do which is educate. I was looking for educationally useful streaming media sites and stumbled across the Discovery Education site which has content for home schoolers as well as a wealth of free and paid resources for viewing.

http://school.discoveryeducation.com/homeworkhelp/math/math_homework_help.html Don't just check out the mathematics section, English Science and many others are also covered.

http://school.discoveryeducation.com/lessonplans/ contains lesson plans from K - 12 and of course suggest that you purchase resources from Discovery which you may choose to do but the foundaton resources available free here for the beginning or seasoned educator is certainly worth bookmarking.

Using Tiewire to correctly secure bolts

Vince kindly agreed to let me film him retensioning my propellor and apart from the retensioning process, I filmed the use of tie wire which without a tie wire tool is quite tricky to twist. These are simple tasks for some, but people like me who are challenged by tasks that involve motor skills now have a video to work off.

Cluster IV - The final nail in the coffin

I have just finished uploading the student enrolment, assessment aned evaluation papers which should round off the requirement for this cluster. In the package of document photos (to ensure that the signatures are there) I have the club and student enrollemnt forms, the student pilot record sheets and the assessment form used for the preflight inspection along with the evaluation form used by the student to provide feedback to the instructor (facilitator).

I will add some reflection after I have emailed Carole as I am keen to finish this off. I guess that if there is a prize for the lowest carbon footprint for assignlent delivery, I would have to be in the ballpark.

Retensioning a brolga propeller on a Drifter

all the usual disclaimers here, but thanks to Vince who gave up his time to demonstrate how to retension the bolts on the propeller and also the importance of doing this. Over to Vince...

Online BAK pop quiz

I totally forgot I prepared this quiz based on questions from Phil Stonebank's book and I would like two things to happen... Instructors to identify what is out of date/changed so I can update it and for the rest of us, see how many you can get right. The quiz covers questions on Basic Aeronautical Knowledge.

Back to School - Day 11

The final run home through the classroom delivered material focussed on assessment. Now that we have concluded this part and now we frantically go through our cluster lists to ensure that we have gathered the evidence, performed the necessary demonstrations of competence sufficient times to prove that we can identify training, adapt training, deliver training, assess training and as always review, refine and improve each of those phases.

Chilli Planting

I was blessed the other day to receive 14 little packets of individually wrapped, labelled and heat rated chilli seeds types. All came from a legitimate source of chilli seeds in Australia and were excess to requirements. Knowing that I am a little keen on chillies, I was the lucky recipient of this package. You will have to wait until tomorrow to see the list - there is one called a "white jellybean" and another called a "bishop's crown". The seeds were passed to me on the basis of anonymity. They have been sitting around for a while - quite a while so we don't know how many will strike. I'll keep you posted on how many strike.

Computer software and hardware

I realised that I hadn't really established a channel for things to do with hardware and software. Although I am not a sage on all things hardware and software, I do have some experience in some vertical segments - particularly multimedia and computer based training. I also know a bit about web development and the use of databases.

I am only creating this entry really to establish a category, but I will start with a piece of hardware that has been in my office for more than 8 years - a ricecooker. Before you ask is he a computer person or a chef - read on...

Instructional Design

Instructional Design has been around for a long time. When I was studying it my lecturers used WW II as crucible checkpoint in the development of this science. Its history extends before and after that time. As we move headlong into assessment as part of our Certificate IV in Training and Assessment it is worth jotting down some of the authors of works who influenced my development of computer based training solutions.

A list of many more than I was exposed to can be found at

http://carbon.cudenver.edu/~mryder/itc_data/idmodels.html

In order, Authors of influence are:

Others like Bloom, Skinner etc are there as well, but Gagne provided foundations for Walter Dick and Lou Carey in their great book the systematic design of instruction and Robert Mager dealt with objectives, assessment, competencies and criterion in an easy to read informative way. Gloria Gery is not really on the list of educationalists, but her work with electronic performance support systems opened my eyes to what was possible, even before Windows 3.0 had a multimedia version.

In dragging out some of the classics written by these people, the links between what we are doing in our course and what they espouse is, as expected very close.
