Pine Creek Flyaway
Oct 29
In the Northern Territory we are blessed with a thing called "lifestyle". Although in the middle of the buildup to the wet where you sweat just standing around in shorts you might argue that there isn't much lifestyle about the North unless you are into 24 hour saunas. I think we have a knack of making good come of bad. In the buildup, the flowers come out and from 500 feet the landscape is a coloured carpet of poinciana, frangipani and many other wonderful trees.
To Pine Creek...
We had been invited by Allan Whiting and his lovely wife Marilyn to visit their property in Pine Creek which luckily has an airstrip. Normally folks might invite us to fly in stay around for a cuppa, share a yarn and then head on home. In this case we were treated to hospitality usually afforded only to visiting royalty.
Pine Creek is a small town about 250km South of Darwin and is famous for its influx of Chinese miners in the late 1800's and for the fact that there are still relics from that era visibal today. Pine Creek has re-emerged as a mining hub which complements its Tourism business. Hunting is also popular.
