Map of our Vietnam Trip

Although we didn't get down to "Fish Sauce" island at the Southern tip of Vietnam, we managed to enjoy a broad ranges of experiences in this Country.

Arriving in Vietnam

Arrived in Ho Chi Minh city last night at 9:40pm on a fairly packed jetstar flight from Darwin. Airport is very clean and at that time of night very empty.

Joes roundup for the last month

Karate

Firstly Joe participated in a karate competition at the end of September which looked at three major areas – individual forms which are the sets of movements they learn, group or team demonstrations and finally sparring. One of my long time work colleagues won a trophy and will represent her region and to prove how small Darwin is, seated behind her were two other colleagues from my workplace at Berrimah farm. Alongside Natalie, the other recipient is the son of a current work colleague. Joe received a bronze and silver medal for his efforts and a great experience.

A belated Happy Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year was last week and we ushered in the year of the rabbit. I got this lovely lladro piece for Helen before we were married and it is beautiful like the person who received it.

Chinese New Year is when a lot of travel, homecoming, hope and noise occurs. Lion dances, red packets and fireworks herald the new year.

Joe's Chinese class made mobiles out of paper that formed the character for luck and prosperity and also traced out four character phrase for us to hang on the wall.

We ate jaozi or steamed dumplings that were handmade by Helen and it is great to see the way she puts them together.

Between the rainy days the humidity has been reasonably high which although good for chillies and plants in general, left us wanting to spend more time in the pool.

Travelling and using ATM machines

We have just returned from our quick birthday trip for Joe who turned nine on the tenth of December and spent the morning in Singapore and the afternoon in Malaysia. The combination of the iPad, the SLR camera and the iPod Nano meant that we had a mobile studio in a camera bag.

The movie of this is continued at the blog...

Joe and the Cupboard Under the Stairs

We live in a two storey house with an internal staircase. We don't live in Little Whinging but as of last weekend we now have a cupboard under the stairs, complete with bed, study table, lights and I suspect wireless internet connectivity. We haven't quite finished teh walls yet, but our plan is to conduct news broadcasts by Joe from there.

I hope to have some pictures available soon.

The door to the cupboard under the stairs was made from pine covered in corflute (the stuff they use to put politicians faces on when they are campaigning. After constructing the frame, stapling the corflute to the frame, going back to Bunnings for the third time to get metal screws I realised that it probably would have been cheaper to buy a real door.

Anyway, unlike Harry Potter's cupboard under the stairs, Joe's is a place of fun and learning... and he is allowed to practise magic as long as he has completed his other homework first. For those who need to update Joe's address details, they are

Joe of course retains full use of his normal bedroom in another part of the house... which can be confusing on those rare times when Joe is told to go to his room...

Basketball - winning and losing

The boys in the U10 went up against Eagles last weekend and they are definately the top team in that age group. Unfortunately we lost that match and that is something for the boys to look at. The good sportsmanship of both teams was great and I can see Joe improving with each game, even if it is his first season. He is loving playing as all the boys do.

In the under 12s where Ned, Joe, Kaiden from the under 10s are playing, they are getting a longer game and certainly in Joe's case he is playing a lot better. I still maintain that this is because the kids are more his size and he can play positively without fear of knocking over

Harmony Day, Orchids and a family heritage

Harmony day is celebrated in Australia on the 21st of March each year.

The continuing message of Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It's about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Basketball - by Joe Christie (8 years old)

By Joe Christie
I am a basket ball player. I play for the TV jets. I am number nineteen. I am here to tell you some rules and tips about basket ball.
1. Never foul someone on the other team, that way they get one or two penalty goals.
2. If you are tall like me defend the goal against the other team.
3. If you are small you can grab the ball off the person who has the ball.
4. If you have a good throw try shooting from the three point line, if not practice.
5. If you are stuck where a whole lot of opposition team is, throw the baseball at someone who is not near where the opposition team is.
I hope these tips will help you in future games. Now here are the rules.
1. No travel.
2. Do not foul.
3. No double or triple dribble.
These are some simple rules that everybody sometimes forgets, now I will tell you where everything is on the court.
The three point line is where you shoot goals so you can get three points.
The circle is where you shoot penalty points when you get fouled.
The base line is where the ball rolls out of the court and the opposition team gets to throw it in.
The centerline is where you do a ball up and try to hit it to your team members.
The backboard is when you try and shoot a goal and if you hit the backboard you have a good chance of getting it in.
Most important the hoop is where you get the goals.
I hope this has helped you with your skills and knowledge.

Visit to Indo Pacific Marine

Today, I visited Indo Pacific Marine with my classmates and Miss McGregor. Here are some of the things I learnt.

There is one black and white striped fish where the male is smaller than the female when she is pregnant.

An interesting fact is that if the mum or dad fish dies, the toddler replaces them.

A Lion fish has spikes on its back that could put you in hospital for 3 or 4 weeks.

A baby whale drinks over 100 cartons of milk per day. It took us 14 ordinary steps to get to the end of the line of milk cartons.
