Remembrance Day 2011

Like a lot of other folks on 11/11/11 I was at work and I did pause briefly at 11 o'clock. I am fortunate enough to have a great view out my window and one part of that view is the cenotaph where our Anzac and Remembrance Day memorials are held.

From my vantage point I took a few pictures of the wreath laying ceremony and the poinciana tree in the foreground of the photograph with it's carpet of red frames the base of the shot with what could be mistaken for a field of poppies, the floral symbol of this day.

Lest We Forget

Joe Plays in the Junior Strings

At Joe's school, all students start a musical instrument in grade three. Joe took up the violin and enjoys learning to play and performing either for us or in the Junior String Ensemble.

Recently Joe's school presented a variety of acts at the seabreeze festival held along the Nightcliff foreshore. Rapid Creek was where I grew up and we often went to the beach for a swim although I would be a little reluctant now with the increasing numbers of crocodiles that live in the North of Australia.

That aside, there are few things more pleasing that taking a late afternoon stroll along the foreshore in the dry season.

If you add in a concert and stalls selling all manner of food and drinks you have a recipe for fun.

Cyclone Carlos forms off Darwin

We had a wet and windy night last night and that was before Carlos became a cyclone. In the suburb I live in we had 455 millimetres of rain in the last 24 hours. That is one and half feet of rain in the old system. Expectedly Rapid Creek flooded Mcmillans Road which meant a bit of a detour to get to work. School was cancelled for the day and our swimming pool had its shade cloth peeled back and it is now sitting in our neighbour's yard.

The Darwin Glenti - a celebration of what we are

The Greek Glenti (which means party) has been held in Darwin for a very long time - over twenty years. The festival is well attended and the aroma of the barbequed octopus, pig on a spit and lamb rotating slowly before being shaved onto a waiting Yiros draws the crowd from a distance and the vibrant music of the Bouzouki welcomes you into the marquees where young and old mingle to listen, watch, eat, drink and generally just be happy with the gathering.

The dancing and singing was exhuberant and laughter was a key component to the event. How the guys sweating over the barbeques managed to keep going the way they did in among the smoke and heat was incredible.

I came for the barbequed octopus, a delicacy I hadn't savoured since the last time I was in Athens and ate it on therooftop of the Hilton as we gazed towards the acropolis and wondered if the dish dated back to those times. Something I always find funny is that I went to a Greek wedding in Athens and was surprised when there wasn't any plate smashing. My hosts were even more suprised, asking why one would want to destroy a perfectly good plate.

The Greeks may have given us democracy but their legacy of food is sometimes a more enjoyable dish than the rigours of politics.

Catalina on the way to Australia via Darwin

Update on the progress of the Catalina to Australia -

N160AT arrived in Colombo Sri Lanka yesterday afternoon!

The Cat is purring and our skillful pilots are getting average groundspeeds over 130 knots and are achieving average fuel flows of just 90 gallons an hour. Minor defects being fixed as we go and the Cat will be in great shape by the time we get to Bankstown

The cabin service is not Quantas first class but I keep the men well fed and watered. No complains yet. The crew is a great team with everybody pitching in.

So until now our route has been -

Nov 15th leaving Seia to Salamanca, Cannes France, Napels Italy, Rhodos Greece, Luxor Egypt, Bahrein, Muscat, Mumbai, and now Colombo Sri Lanka where we are having a day off.

The boys suggested to sell me for fuel to the Arabs, but they wanted to get writ of some camels and there was no space left for them on board. So the deal is off. Hope you have some better ideas to get VH Cat to Bankstown!

Mumbai (Bombaywe say) was one big bureaucratical adventure. Monday the 24th we got up at 4, left Muscat, were flying most of the time at 8000 ft, (a bit cold high in the sky without a heater but who cares, warm socks, coats, caps and gloves solve the problem) we arrived in Mumbai 15.30 lt. No one there for the Avgas, we could have the fuel only at 20.00lt they told us and finally we were having dinner at 23.00lt in hotel Gordon House. Our pasports were taken by customs and all over we had checks, Next morning early (with pasports) leaving for Sri Lanka Bandaranaike Intl, where we were welcomed very friendly.

As we are flying mainly at 8000ft most of the time it is hard to take pictures, we do our best, although views are hazy...even from the Pylon where I am seated most of the time, it is a great place to be with good views.

Our route will continue tomorrow to Banda Acheh, Medan, Palembang, Bali, Darwin,Cairns,Brisbane??,Kempsey, Bankstown Sydney!

Of course nothing will be sure I guess, and I really hope you will be able to get the money to get us in Bankstown.

It will be worth it, because you bought a beautiful Cat with a lot of possibilities once it will be in Bankstown!

Suggestion....could you invite the Dutch consul of Sydney....publicity???
Dutch and Australians have been fighting side by side in the 2nd World War after all, and we both have a Catalina!

Will try to keep you posted as much as possible..

Best regards, Bernie

Open Day at the Darwin Aviation Heritage Centre Museum supported by fly in of Ultralight Aircraft

The Darwin air museum holds an open day which this year is on the 20th of April. The Top End Flying Club will be flying in for the event and will park up for the day providing a static display and information about recreational flying and the Top End Flying Club. All proceeds go to support Legacy so we think it is a good collaborative aviation effort. They (and we) are very keen to participate in this event. This day is special as it is the only day that visitors are allowed to sit in the cockpit of the aircraft like the B52.

Christmas Party Tomorrow

The TEFC Christmas Party will begin at 5pm this Saturday 24th of Novermber. Make sure you have voted before you arrive as Santa has scheduled a flying visit for 5:30 (Which means probably 6.00pm)

Meat will be provided and you are asked to bring along a plate of salad or nibbleys or dessert etc... I had to smile when at a work function recently, people were asked to bring a plate and one person turned up with a plate... an empty one.

If you have a little one (or not so little one) you would like Santa to give a present to, can you have it wrapped and ready for deposit into Santa's bag by around 5:30 on Saturday. Elves Elizabeth, Annabelle others will be able to guide you.

We have it on good authority that there will be no peanuts in the lollies and I am personally hoping for some of those natural dinosaur jelly things.

If you remember from last year we also witnessed some UFOs...

So come on down, meet Santa and let's celebrate another year of fun in the air and look forward to adventures the next year will bring.

If you are planning to have a few drinks - Don't drink and drive - bring a swag or have someone else take you home.
