Joe competes tomorrow in the Tournament of Minds

Joe and his team are participating in the Tournament of Minds competition at Charles Darwin University tomorrow. It is all quite serious but fun at the same time. As parents we had to sign documents saying we wouldn't assist in any way and Joe had to commit to the after school program. As a result we know little about what we will be seeing tomorrow except that it is a presentation and there is a paper crane involved.

What I do know is that Joe and his team have had a ton of fun working in the team. Joe's team is in the maths engineering discipline.

Helen and I wish Joe and his team luck tomorrow and our team from Information Services will be filming and broadcasting the event.

Joe Plays in the Junior Strings

At Joe's school, all students start a musical instrument in grade three. Joe took up the violin and enjoys learning to play and performing either for us or in the Junior String Ensemble.

Recently Joe's school presented a variety of acts at the seabreeze festival held along the Nightcliff foreshore. Rapid Creek was where I grew up and we often went to the beach for a swim although I would be a little reluctant now with the increasing numbers of crocodiles that live in the North of Australia.

That aside, there are few things more pleasing that taking a late afternoon stroll along the foreshore in the dry season.

If you add in a concert and stalls selling all manner of food and drinks you have a recipe for fun.

Joe and the Volcano

Joe has just completed a school project relating to natural disasters. As part of the project, he built a volcano from modelling clay and created an eruption using a combination of vinegar, bicarb soda and food colouring. Although there is a video, here are some of the still shots.

One Thousand and one photo albums

Or pretty close to it. I have created a little program that randomly selects a random album from my twenty or so album repositories up on the Internet and presents the viewer with a slide show. To view a new album, just press F5 to refresh with a new album.

Joe's reading

Joe has to read to his parents for 15 minutes. I thought this would be a good chance to show what an eportfolio example is. Joe is not being formally assessed on this work, but by placing a recording of his work here - it proves that he has done his homework and provides an example of his standard of reading at this point in time. So, if you are interested, here are the first three chapters of Roald Dahl's book Fantastic Mr Fox as recorded by Joe Christie - 8 years old.

Words to work on - Orchard, Pot Bellied and probably a couple of others of I missed.

3 WW II airstrips flown in one day

Firstly it is so long since I have blogged on Joe's site that I forgot the login. Not good (work life balance) I am reading, playing and taking him for flights which is what this post is about. I still feel bad that other things are getting in the way. Anyway the good news - we took a great flight to a few places over the weekend and here is the comic that describes that journey.

I was thinking that in preparation for my next career (whatever that might be) I should take the ultralight, combine it with some ww II heritage airstrips and crocs, boats etc and create a YouTube version of Tales of the Golden Monkey (Check out YouTube). There could be villians, heros, ancient metaphors, current social challenges. When you think about it, we do have some adventures with those flying machines.

With Joe learning about meteorology at the moment I am really pleased he is learning something of benefit now and into the future.

Joe's News - Week 7

Good morning grade 2. Today I am going to talk about the famous astronaut named Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr. who later changed his name to "Buzz Aldrin".

Buzz Aldrin was involved in a lot of space missions. He was chosen to be an astronaut in 1963. I would like to tell you about the Apollo program that he worked on in NASA. He served as a pilot for Apollo 8, man's first flight around the moon and on Apollo 11, the mission to land a man on the moon.
Buzz Aldrin joined Neil Armstrong and landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. After returning to Earth, he embarked on an international goodwill tour. He received the Presidential Freedom Medal as well as more than 50 other awards from around the world.
After 21 years of service, Buzz Aldrin resigned from NASA in July 1971 and became a consultant. Today he travels around the world teaching people about the future of space efforts and discussing his and other people's latest concepts and ideas for exploring the universe.
This information came from Wikipedia and I received help with this from my Mum.

Thank you for listening to my news. Do you have any questions?

Another achievement award

Joe joined a large group of people at Essington School's assembly last Friday and received an award for great spelling. Public displays of encouragement through awards are something that seems to have developed much further from when I was at school and of course now being a little older I appreciate the value of the carrot over the stick.
