Some tips for great audio in your eLearning, podcasts or video productions

The one challenge that seems to face us as we create our eLearning pieces is capturing good audio. You may remember I recreated a "studio" from packing foam which goes a long way to removing street noise if you recording from home and the sound of a fan overhead (if you live in the tropics like me). I have since found a couple more blog entries from audio experts that really are worth reading.

These links teach you everything from how to get great audio from ordinary equipment and I have chosen them on the basis that the tips need to satisfy two of three criteria - good, fast or cheap.

Podcasting, Vodcasting with a teleprompter

Okay, you have to do that software demonstration using camtasia, jing, captivate or any of those screen recorders, or you want to create a podcast or you want to create a news broadcast like the ones they use on the True Blue News Network.

You think it is easy, but after the 15th take you realise why broadcasters get paid for what they do.

Don't worry, you can now use a free (for 90 days) autocue / teleprompter tool on your PC to read out your podcast smoothly. You can download it from http://download.cnet.com/Podcast-Autocue/3000-2169_4-10488941.html?tag=bc

It is fairly basic, but basic is good... just paste your text in, set the speed of the scroll and font size - set up your sound recorder and off you go.

Apart from podcasting, you can use it to play a slideshow, write your travelogue notes for the slide show and then play back the slideshow and record using the teleprompter to scroll through the text. Yes you can just print it out, but the rustling of papers near the microphone can sometimes be annoying.

Here is an adaption of a mini soundproofing studio I saw someone setup. Obviously the microphone should be lower, but I think you get the idea.

 

And yes, I did use the autocue product to record the attached podcast.

Converting educational DVDs for on demand delivery into the classroom

We have a number of exceptional learning assets from the Australian Children Television Foundation. These are distributed on DVD and are in a variety of formats. The most common formats are Adobe PDF, DVD Movie, executable flash, FLV (Flash Video) and some html documents.

The challenge is to convert where required and upload the content into our network in a way that teachers can access and use within our network, but the resources cannot be copied or reused outside of the scope of our license.

The content of the DVDs should be in a format that a teacher in a remote or urban location can play the video on an electronic whiteboard or projector to the class and if a student misses out because they were absent, they can login from school or home to review the content at their convenience.

podcasting and SharePoint

We like SharePoint (although we do have our bad days with it) and we like podcasting/vodcasting/blogs. We have established blogs in SharePoint and I have mentioned how impressed I was with the integration of MS Word as the editor and the ease of publishing content to a SharePoint blog.

We had discussed integrating the beta version of the SharePoint Podcasting Kit into our schools environment and although we really want to do it, we needed to make sure that whereever these files are stored we have indexed them, provided enough computer power to deliver them and ensured they have both the quality and clearance for delivery via our networks. This blog entry is a revisitation of this request and options available.
