Android devices and our wireless network

I am not yet an android operating system user but just like the influx of iDevices into our education network - iPad, iPhone, iPod - we have encountered a little glitch with Android devices. Version 3.1 is required to join using our proxy configuration. A lot of devices at the time of writing this are running 3.01 which does not support proxy settings. I had a quick look on forums and there appear to be some folks having problems AFTER they upgrade to 3.1 from 3.01 so I am not sure yet whether the "fix" exposes more problems.

So please inform yourself before performing any upgrade... :-)

If there are any Android users out there on our education network (you will know who you are) please let me know via comment or email if you have enjoyed success or otherwise in connecting your device to our wireless network.

If ITIL FITS in your pocket

We use software to deliver learning. That software runs on computers over networks. The software we use includes video conferencing, authored lessons and integration with our learning management solution.

Somewhere in that mix of technology are students, teachers and course designers. What happens when it goes wrong? What happens when there are 40,000 students using computers and they need a computer and program to be working for their lesson which lasts 45 minutes?

Acrobat.com free video conferencing using Adobe Connect

Yes, well there are a couple of catches. It is free, but you can only have yourself and two other people in the same room. What is cool is that like Microsoft's live messenger offerings that come with space to store your stuff and tools to edit things, and Google's things that do the same thing, Adobe has glued together its offerings so you can whip up a presentation online, prepare a spreadsheet or convert something to PDF (apparently only 5 times in the free version but that is fine).

Adobe Connect - Under the network covers

This is only helpful to network folk who might be troubleshooting your Adobe Connect /Firewall challenges but...

Once connected to a meeting room if you go SHIFT HELP ABOUT – the ensuing dialog box will give you the connection string for the meeting which contains at the beginning either rtmp: or rtmpt: and further on :1935, :443 or :80 to determine the port.
