Service Pack 1 for Adobe Connect 8

The new service pack for Adobe Connect 8 is available. We will probably update over the term holidays in July.

Featured enhancements follow:
•New layout bar to easily manage and switch between meeting layouts
•Presenter Only Area Q&A pod
•Support for 200 people split into 20 break-out rooms
•Support for playback of H264 video
•Ability to create screen-sharing black list

A new Adobe Connect Meeting add-in is required for SP1. It will install automatically the first time you join an Adobe Connect 8 SP1 meeting. If you are in a locked down environment, you will need to pre-install the add-in using the links provided here.

I've only got three things to say about the new Adobe Connect 8!

  • Fast
  • Great Quality Video
  • Easy to use intuitive interface

Version 8 is a monumental leap from version 7 and 7.5.

The backend administration pages don't look much different although in addition to addition teleconference call providers in to blend teleconferences with your connect session, you can now blend in SIP audio video streams which means that we can connect Office Communication Server into Adobe Connect as a stream.

Adobe Connect 8 release - review and video overview

We are strong users of Adobe Connect 7.5 and are very pleased with the value it adds to our eLearning environment in the Northern Territory. Well Adobe has released version 8 of the product and rather than me try to interpret the reviews in great detail, I will provide the links.

When are we planning to migrate? Possibly before the start of term next year depending on a number of factors. Have any readers deployed Adobe Connect 8? Let me know what you experience has been.

When flash doesn't play even where it is supposed to

We use a number of authoring tools (Captivate, Articulate, Hot Potatoes) to create eLearning pieces that are produced as flash. We had been generating one of these pieces and although it played perfectly on my computer and other computers, it wouldn't play on another computer in our office.

This was my fault finding approach...

Adding royalty free music to your music clip using Sonicfire pro and premiere pro

I have added links in the past to some websites that provide royalty free music. This solution is a little different, costs money but provides a more polished product. Sonicfire from Smartsound allows you to take their music tracks and through a series of manual and automatic features match the mood, tempo, instruments and volume of the musical piece to video clip, blending perfectly with narration. The embedded YouTube clip (sorry to those with no YouTube access) demonstrates the work flow of using both Premiere Pro (my preferred video editor) and Sonicfire Pro (also my preferred music integrator) to create a finished clip. Ironically the piece is about ReflecMedia green screening (also my preferred green screen technology solution).

Adobe Connect and Firefox Problem (solution)

Someone indirectly reported that they were unable to access Adobe Connect using Firefox.

Our Standard Operating Environment promotes IE as the corporate standard with Firefox as a backup for use at home without needing to reset proxy settings

Upon trying Firefox, I encountered a problem as well. The usually cryptic and misleading message said...

-code-

JRun Servlet ErrorI

413 Header Length too Large

-/code-

As it turns out, this person was having the problem in IE not Firefox and with Coldfusion which also uses Jrun - so this problem stretches across applications and browsers.

The fix?

Latest Flash Player shrinks Captivate imports of PowerPoint slides

I was doing some work on an orientation course for our human resources division and was importing a PowerPoint into Captivate, which is an authoring program from Adobe. Previously everything had been fine, but now when the slides came in, they were tiny.

Culprit is the latest version of the Adobe Flash player 10.1

Flash vs Quicktime vs Windows Media formats - which one?

My eyes always open wider when I see an article comparing these technologies. We chose Adobe Connect and with the recent chest thumping about which technology was best, it was good to read an article that had some numbers - regardless of any suggestion of bias that the article was supporting one technology over another. You can read the article in full below.

What questions did it raise for me? What questions did it answer? What to I need to look out for?

Some great stats about authoring tools

There are a lot of tools we can use to create online learning. Everything from MS Word through to Articulate's range of products. What I have at the following link is a ranking of tools by satisfaction. http://elearningtech.pbworks.com/ToolSatisfaction These charts group tools into authoring, rapid elearning and simulation and include another chart of how many people responded, suggesting usage rates for the tool.

Adobe Connect Plugin for version 7.5

We are looking to upgrade to version 7.5 of Adobe Connect and this will be a painless process. Apparently there is only a need to allocated two hours for installation and testing and still leave enough time for a rollback if required.

The time consuming portion may be the installation of the updated Adobe Connect plugin. I had a look at what was required, and downloaded the plugin which is a available at http://download.macromedia.com/pub/connect/updaters/meeting/7_5/win/connect_addin_75.zip and then installed it.

The file is 2 megabytes in size.

Interestingly for a silent install it can be installed from the command prompt by typing setup.exe \verysilent

This allows for silent installation and maybe what our support folk can do to ensure that when we cut across to the new version of Adobe Connect that our key users, our students and teachers have the latest plugin installed and operational.

I have Adobe Connect 7.03 installed and the plugin seems to be happily backward compatible.

It is important to remember that the plugin is only required for sharing your desktop so most activities don't really require the plugin.
