‘Think before you post’ is the core message of today’s Safer Internet Day, the international cybersafety event co-ordinated in Australia by the ACMA, as part of its Cybersmart cybersafety program. Safer Internet Day is organised by Insafe, an international network for internet safety.
To mark the event, the ACMA is holding cybersafety educational activities in schools throughout Australia. Click more to view video if you have YouTube access.
The theme ’Think before you post’ is an essential message for young people. While many claim to know the risks of posting too much personal or inappropriate information online, they may not always translate that into safe online behaviour. Thinking about the consequences before hitting ’post’ may help to minimise negative experiences online
How to be cybersmart!
THINK
TTell your Mum or Dad if you see something online that upsets you, or if someone makes you feel unhappy. You can also talk to a trusted adult like a teacher: they can help.
HHide your password. Only ever share it with your parents – never with your friends. Someone else could go online pretending to be you and do something that could get you into trouble.
IInteresting websites can be fun. Check with Mum or Dad if a site is okay to use before you visit. Sometimes they can set up a good list of sites just for you.
BeNNice to people you talk to on the internet or phone. Name calling or being mean is not cool. Look out for yourself and for others.
KKeep your special personal information safe. Never give your real name, address or phone number to anyone you don’t know in the real world. Use a nickname in chat rooms or when you play games on the computer.
